FYI, I did find a way to sort these jFilter results in a way that happens to work for my application.
I realized I can directly set the creation date to whatever date I want, and then sort on that.
This works because my items are educational classes, so I set the creation date to the start date of the class and they appear sorted by start date in the results.
These event articles get created dynamically by the trainers filling out a form in Tassos' Convert Forms, which then creates the article by calling the Joomla4 REST API. I set the creation date explicitly during that creation.
